ZETA Moderates Key Panel on Building Europe’s Renewable and Low-Carbon Gas Markets at FLAME 2025

At FLAME 2025, we were proud to contribute to a dynamic panel discussion on Building Europe’s Renewable and Low-Carbon Gas Markets, expertly moderated by Jan Haizmann, Secretary General of ZETA (Zero Emissions Traders Alliance). The session brought together industry leaders from Vattenfall, SEFE Securing Energy for Europe GmbH, Sedigas - Asociación Española del Gas, and EDF Trading to explore how to establish robust trading systems for renewable and low-carbon gases.

Key Topics Explored

🔹 Pathway to Market Liquidity
Panelists discussed the essential steps to evolve from emerging markets toward liquid and vibrant trading hubs for renewable and low-carbon gas products.

🔹 Trading Instruments and Transparency
The development of traditional trading tools—including hubs, price indexes, and dedicated platforms—was highlighted as key to attracting new participants, enhancing transparency, and securing strategic partnerships.

🔹 Regulatory Fragmentation
Addressing the fragmented regulatory environment was seen as critical to fostering credible spot and forward markets across Europe.

🔹 Guarantees of Origin (GoOs)
The role of GoOs in boosting market liquidity was emphasized, with calls for greater standardization to improve the tradability of renewable gases continent-wide.

🔹 Hydrogen Market Reassessment
The panel reviewed global hydrogen market trends and discussed their strategic impact on Europe’s competitiveness.

Supporting Biomethane Market Growth

Innovative approaches to incentivize biomethane producers—especially smaller-scale operations—were explored. Transitioning from subsidy reliance to market-based trading through instruments like Biomethane Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) can provide stable revenue and promote biomethane integration into Europe’s gas system. This is particularly important given the rapid biomethane market expansion in Eastern Europe and Ukraine, which offers potential to reduce dependence on imported fuels.

ZETA continues to facilitate conversations and initiatives that accelerate the development of transparent, liquid, and efficient renewable gas markets, supporting Europe’s broader clean energy transition.
